Guinea Pig Nipple Hyperkeratosis?

Enlarged Nipples Warning Sign

Case Study

Guinea Pig Uterine Tumor Case
Enlarged Nipples Warning Sign

Banana, a 5-year-old intact female guinea pig, was brought to our clinic after her owner noticed unusually enlarged nipples.

During the consultation, we observed marked nipple hyperkeratosis and a caudal abdominal mass.

After performing the appropriate diagnostic tests, including X-rays and ultrasound, we confirmed the presence of a uterine neoplastic mass.

🩺 Treatment

Banana underwent a successful ovariohysterectomy, a surgical procedure in which both the uterus and ovaries are removed.

💚 Recovery

Just one hour after surgery, Banana was already eating hay with a good appetite and recovering remarkably fast — as you can see in the video at the end.

🔍 Uterine neoplasia in guinea pigs

The most common uterine tumors in guinea pigs are leiomyomas, leiomyosarcomas, and adenocarcinomas.

Early signs may include enlarged or crusted nipples, abdominal enlargement, hormonal changes, vaginal discharge or bleeding, lethargy, and reduced appetite.

The treatment of choice is early ovariohysterectomy, ideally performed before severe complications develop, such as uterine infection (pyometra), vaginal bleeding, metastasis, anorexia, or systemic illness.

✨ Early detection saves lives. Subtle changes matter.
