Why Do Bird Beaks Overgrow?
A bird’s beak should never become overgrown under ideal conditions—but this Quaker Parrot’s severe elongation made eating and grooming really complicated. Here’s why it happens and how we treat (and prevent!) it
🔍 Causes of Beak Overgrowth:
- Nutritional Deficiencies (Low calcium, low vitamin A)
- Congenital Disorders
- Infectious diseases (viral, bacterial or parasitic)
- Lack of Natural Wear (No chew toys, soft diet, no foraging)
- Traumatic injuries
⚠️ Left untreated, overgrown beaks can lead to starvation, dehydration, and even death!
💡 Treatment:
- Beak trimming (With specialized tools to reshape safely, do not use scissors!)
- Diet correction (Pellets, veggies, fruit, calcium supplements)
- Addressing underlying illness
🛑 Prevention is KEY!
- Balanced diet
- Chew toys & foraging
- Regular beak checks
